  • The unbeaten Ortiz is one of boxing’s rising stars while Hooker is a former world champion one fight removed from losing his belt.
  • Ortiz is a massive -1000 betting favorite against Hooker who is currently listed at +600.

Unbeaten rising star Vergil Ortiz looks to increase his stock as he takes on former world champion Maurice Hooker in a hometown battle on March 20, 2021.

The two Dallas, Texas natives will square off in a 12-round contest for the vacant WBO International Welterweight title. It will headline a fight card that will feature the United States debut of heavyweight prospect Arslanbek “Lion” Makhmudov and a women’s world title fight between Anabel “Avispa” Ortiz and Senisa “Superbad” Estrada”.

No official venue has been announced although the event is expected to take place in Dallas and air on DAZN worldwide, including the United States, Russia, and Mexico.

Unbeaten Rising Star

The 22-year old Ortiz is one of boxing’s hottest prospects and fastest rising stars. As an amateur, he was a seven-time national champion and was a winner at the 2013 Junior Olympics. Since making his professional debut in 2016, Ortiz has stayed unbeaten and has a perfect record of 16-0 with 16 knockouts. Said Ortiz of the fight:

“First and foremost, I’m really grateful to be fighting back at home again. Not only that, but I’ll be fighting another Dallas native in Maurice Hooker. I’ve known Hooker since back in the amateur days. I know we’re going to give the fans back at home a fight to remember.”

In 2019, Ortiz was named as ESPN and Ring’s Prospect of the Year after going 4-0 with four knockouts during the year while picking up consecutive wins over former interim champion Mauricio Herrera, former title challenger Antonio Orozco, and former WBA international champion Brad Solomon. He is coming off a 7th round TKO of veteran Samuel Vargas, in the first fight Ortiz has gone past six rounds.

His skill and knockout power has put him among a handful of young fighters competing for prime billing in the years to come. With Canelo Alvarez leaving Golden Boy Promotions, Ortiz is one of Oscar De La Hoya’s most promising fighters. De La Hoya hopes that a win over Hooker will book Ortiz a ticket to a world title fight.

Former WBO Super Lightweight Champion

Maurice Hooker is the former WBO super lightweight champion who also challenged for the WBC 140-pound title. The 31-year old known as Mighty Mo is the number 6 ranked light welterweight by the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board. He is also the 7th ranked contender in the WBC’s 140-pound rankings. Said Hooker:

“I’ve never been one to shy away from a fight. The decision to fight Ortiz was an easy one as it allows me to prove to the world something that I already know—that I’m one of the best welterweights in the world. I have a new team around me who has taken my game to a whole new level, and I feel amazing at this weight class. I can’t wait to put on a show for all the fans on March 20. Dallas, get ready!”

Hooker turned pro in 2011 and compiled a record of 23-0-3 before challenging British boxer Terry Flanagan for the WBO title in 2018. As a +575 betting underdog in most Boxing betting sites, Hooker upset Flanagan via split decision to win his first world title. He would successfully defend the belt twice before losing it to WBC champion Jose Carlos Ramirez in a title unification match on July 27, 2019.

Mighty Mo has not fought since knocking out Uriel Perez in December 2019 in his first bout back since losing to Ramirez. Although he has a significant experience and length advantage, Hooker enters this upcoming fight against the hard hitting Ortiz as a massive +600 betting underdog at SportsBetting.ag. But knowing that Hooker once defied similar odds against Flanagan, the -1000 favorite Ortiz could be in for the biggest test of his young career.
