The Grade III, $150,000 Toboggan Stakes will run as Race 4 on the Jan. 30 card at Aqueduct Racetrack.

The event for 4-year-olds and up will cover seven furlongs and include names like Pete’s Play Call, Share the Ride, and Stan the Man among the small field of five.

Here is a look at the top runners set for the Toboggan Stakes:

Betting Preview: Pete’s Play Call, Share the Ride

One of the leading names coming into the race is Michael Dubb’s Pete’s Play Call. The 8-year-old gelding from Munnings is trained by Rudy Rodriguez.

He is an experienced runner with a career record of 14-9-6 from 46 starts and earnings of $648,421. He already has one victory in 2021.

That victory came back on Jan. 2 in the Gravesend Stakes, where he registered a 104 Speed Figure. To close out his 2020 season, he scored a Nov. 27 allowance optional claiming race at Aqueduct. His other performances include a runner-up effort in an Oct. 25 allowance optional claiming race at Belmont Park, where he registered a 106 Speed Figure, and a fourth-place finish in another on Sept. 26 also at the track.

Pete’s Play Call will break from post 1 under rider Jorge A. Vargas, Jr.

He will be up against Silvino Ramirez’s Share the Ride. The 6-year-old gelding from Candy Ride is trained by Antonio Arriaga.

He is 8-4-4 from 21 career starts with earnings of $389,860, and he has one runner-up effort this year so far.

That second-place run came in the Jan. 16 Fire Plug Stakes at Laurel Park, where he registered a 113 Speed Figure. He closed out the 2021 season with a victory in the Nov. 29 Fall Highweight Handicap (G3) at Aqueduct, and he scored a Nov. 18 allowance race at Parx Racing.

Share the Ride will break from post 3 under rider Manuel Franco.

Betting Preview: Stan the Man

Another runner to look out for is Long Lake Stable’s Stan the Man. The 7-year-old gelding from Broken Vow is trained by John Terranova II.

He is 7-9-3 from 27 career starts with earnings of $541,124. In 2021, he has one second-place finish.

He took second in the Jan. 2 Gravesend Stakes at Aqueduct, registering a 99 Speed Figure. He finished out 2020 with another runner-up effort in the Nov. 29 Fall highweight Handicap (G3) at the track, and he took third in the Oct. 3 Kelso Handicap (G2) at Belmont Park.

Stan the Man will break from post 4 under rider Eric Cancel.

The rest of the field (post, jockey) is set to include: Drafted (Post 2, D. Davis); and American Power (Post 5, K. Carmouche).

This is a race full of highly-experienced runners, and there is a good shot that Pete’s Play Call takes it. His 2021 performance was an impressive one where he demonstrated speed and overcame Stan the Man to win the Gravesend. He has also consistently performed well at Aqueduct throughout his long career.
