NHL Betting Preview: Detroit Red Wings vs. Florida Panthers – Sunday, Jan. 31, 2021

The Panther will play in Detroit against the Red Wings in a Central Division matchup. Puck drop is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. eastern from the Little Caesars Arena.

These two teams just went to battle last night in a game that was decided in overtime. Aleksi Heponiemi was able to score three minutes into overtime to give the Florida Panthers the win.

The Panthers come into this game only having played five games due to covid issues amongst teams they were scheduled to face. The Red Wings are having covid issues themselves amongst several of their players.

Florida Panthers Betting Preview: Are the Panthers contenders?

The Panthers are off to one of the best starts in their franchise history. Florida is 4-0-0-1 in this new season, they continue to find ways to win.

Florida has been scoring almost at will throughout their last five games. They are averaging 3.8 goals per game which is the 5th best in the NHL.

Two guys who have been leading the Panther offensively have been Patric Hornqvist and Carter Verhaeghe. Both guys’ stat lines read 4 goals and 2 assists, both leading the team in points.

Goaltending has also been a bright spot for the Panther with veteran Sergei Bobrovsky getting the job done. In three starts Bobrovsky is 3-0 and only allowing 2.8 goals per game.

Detroit Red Wings Betting Preview: Have to find some offensive help for Bertuzzi.

Tyler Bertuzzi has been very impressive to start off this season. In nine games, Bertuzzi has been able to score five goals and assist on two others. The Red Wings only have three other players with more than one goal.

Detroit has struggled to score goals this season, scoring only 2 goals per game. The really makes winning tough when the defense and goalies are giving up 3.6 goals per game, which is 27th overall in the NHL.

Starting goalie Jonathan Bernier sustained a shoulder injury in Thursday night’s game against the Dallas Stars. The Red Wings are going to have to hope that was not serious and Bernier can get back in the lineup soon because the backup, Thomas Greiss is off to an 0-4-2 start.

The Red Wings are also dealing with the new COVID protocols that are put into place this season. Detroit will have five players who are out indefinitely due to these protocols.

Free Pick

The Panthers are 3-2 this season against the spread and 3/2 over/under. The Panthers have been very good on the road this season, 2-0-0-1, with their only loss coming down to a shootout.

The Red Wings are 5-4 against the spread and 3/6 over/under. The Red Wings are 2-2-1 when playing at home.

Besides the goals per game margin, the Panthers are also a lot better on the power play. Florida is scoring on 25% of their power play opportunities while the Red Wings are only scoring on 14.8% of theirs.

With Bernier more than likely out, the Panthers should continue making it hard on Greiss to get into the win column. May be noteworthy however to double-check on this before placing any bets.
