Move to ban celebrity TV gambling adverts that hook the young

The rule change would mean lucrative gambling or lottery ads featuring sports personalities such as José Mourinho, Harry Redknapp and Wayne Rooney would be banned.

Tottenham manager Mourinho has appeared in Paddy Power adverts, former football boss Redknapp has fronted Bet Victor ads and Derby County striker Rooney has promoted 32Red.

The Committees of Advertising Practice, the body that writes the advertising rules in the UK, hopes the change will restrict the potential for gambling to appeal to under-18s and vulnerable adults.

Marc Etches, of GambleAware, said: “We welcome efforts to reduce the exposure of gambling advertising to children and young people by prohibiting content that could appeal to under-18s.
