Holly Holm Eyeing Germaine De Randamie Rematch After Fight Island Win

  • A rematch against Germaine de Randamie could be next for the Preacher’s Daughter.

Holly Holm returned to prominence with an impressive five-round win over Irene Aldana at UFC Fight Island 4 this weekend. The former women’s bantamweight title used her superior striking technique to outclass her game opponent. Holm even nearly finished Aldana in the final round and when all was said and done, the Preacher’s Daughter was on top of her game agan.

During the post-fight press conference, the name on everyone’s lips was the woman who won in the co-main event: Germaine De Randamie. The Iron Lady got into a firefight with Julianna Pena and ended up putting the Venezuelan Vixen to sleep with a guillotine.

When asked if she wanted to fight Randamie next, Holm replied:

“That’s definitely an option. That’s something that I think everybody felt like her and I would meet up in there again. So we’ll see where it goes from here.”

De Randamie is definitely more than just an option. She is the next best fight out there for Holm. So if uncle Dana were listening, that’s the next fight to make.

Controversial Win

It can be recalled that in 2017, Holm and De Randamie squared off for the inaugural UFC women’s featherweight title at UFC 208. However, the win came controversially as De Randemie rocked Holm with solid shots after the bell during two different rounds. Despite those, she was not penalized a point by the referee.

Those two illegal shots mattered in the fight since they were the two most significant strikes landed by either fighter during their 25-minute encounter. Both certainly gave De Randamie an advantage and she was only warned by the referee again after the second strike.

The Iron Lady swept all scorecard 48-47 although if a point had been deducted for her second infraction, the bout would have ended in a draw. To her credit though, De Randamie outlander Holm 144-122 in total strikes but only had an 80-77 edge in total significant strikes landed. She also had the edge over the American in striking accuracy at 53% against 42%.

Going Out on Top

Given their history, it was but logical for Holm to call out De Randamie after their win. Aside from their past, De Randamie is also the current no. 1 contender in the bantamweight division with Holm coming in next at second. With no challenger yet for Amanda Nunes’ next fight, the winner of no. 1 versus no. 2 could easily earn the next title shot.

Holm said last week that she hopes to retire with the title on her waist. The Preacher’s Daughter added that if she made a statement against a highly-ranked fighter like Aldana, she would return to title contention. She did just that after her impressive win over the 6th ranked female bantamweight in the promotion.

Entering Saturday’s fight, Holm had dropped five out of her previous eight bouts. Many had counted her out already and some even called for her retirement. But after a virtuoso performance at Fight Island, there is no doubt that Holm is back in the title picture. One more big win, possibly against De Randamie will get her closer to her goal of going out on top.

Threat To Nunes?

Holm has fought Amanda Nunes before and she was knocked out by the Lioness with a head kick when they fought at UFC 239 in July 2019. But there is no question that Holm is still the biggest threat to Nunes in the current UFC women’s roster.

The Preacher’s Daughter is arguably the most technical striker in the division, even perhaps better than Nunes. Holm is a former multiple-time world boxing champion and kickboxing title holder. She is perhaps the only striker in the bantamweight division who can hold her own against the champ. Sure, Nunes spiked her the first time but if Holm doesn’t get caught, she will be a problem for Nunes.

At 38, this is Holly Holm’s last run at the gold. In her last two bouts, she has beaten the 5th and 6th ranked bantamweights in the UFC. Now she has her sights set on the top ranked contender in De Randamie. There are no guarantees in the UFC but Holm is making the most out of her chances.
