The St. Louis Cardinals always seem to be in the hunt for a playoff spot every season. But they have not gone far in the postseason due to the lack of a true superstar. Now, the Cardinals have seen their betting odds shorten after finally getting their man.
Before the 2020 campaign, the Cardinals tried to swing a deal for Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado but that did not materialize. But persistence always pays off as one year later, the Cardinals have engineered a blockbuster deal that has seen them get the three-time NL homerun leader.

Less than a week ago, the Cardinals pulled off a blockbuster trade by acquiring the superstar that the team badly needed in third baseman Nolan Arenado from the Colorado Rockies. Although the deal is still subject to various approvals, it is expected to be completed in the coming days.
After negotiating for months, a deal was finally reached when Colorado agreed to send $50M to help St. Louis cover for part of the star third baseman’s six years and $199M remaining on his contract. If finalized, the trade would provide additional adjustments to Arenado’s contract, including an additional year with a guaranteed $15M, an additional opt-out clause, and the reinstatement of the no-trade clause that was waived for the trade to be completed.
Since the trade involves a huge amount of money, it will still be subject to the approval of Major League Baseball. And because Arenado is expected to defer a sum of money and amend his existing contract, the MLB Players Association must sign off the deal. Should the deal get all necessary consents, which is expected, the Cardinals’ would significantly improve their status as the favorite in the National League Central and see their World Series odds get a nice bump.

Despite the status of the trade still pending, the Cardinals’ odds to win the 2021 World Series has already gotten a nice bump. The best MLB betting sites have shortened St. Louis’ odds since news of the trade broke out. From a +4000 before the deal, the Cardinals are now listed at +2200 at SportsBetting.ag. As for the divisional odds, the same online sportsbook now has St. Louis as the +140 odds on favorite to win the NL Central.
In Arenado, the Cardinals are getting an 5-time National League All-Star selection. The third baseman is a great fit for St. Louis’ identity of pitching and defense as Arenado has won the Golden Gloves in each of his first eight seasons with Colorado. At the plate, he figures to slide into the clean-up position behind first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, whom the Cardinals also acquired via trade.
Arenado is coming off a season where he struggled at the plate with a .253 batting average and eight home runs. He missed the final nine games with a bone bruise on his left shoulder. However, that came after a career year in 2019 where he finished with a .315 hitting average, 41 home runs, and 118 RBIs. The Cardinals hope that the latter version shows up this year.
